Dog Food Portion Formula (RER-Based)

Uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula from veterinary nutrition science, adjusted for activity level and life stage.

RER = 70 × (Body Weight in kg)^0.75
Daily Calories = RER × Activity Multiplier × Life Stage Multiplier
Daily Food (lbs) = Daily Calories ÷ Calories per lb of food
Daily Cost = Daily Food (lbs) × Cost per lb

Activity multipliers range from 1.2 (sedentary) to 2.5 (working/athletic dogs). Puppies need approximately 2× adult calories per unit of body weight.
