How Sales Commission & Quota Attainment Are Calculated

Commission is earned at your on-target rate up to the accelerator threshold, then any sales above that threshold earn commission at an accelerated multiplier.

Quota Attainment % = (Actual Sales ÷ Annual Quota) × 100
Base Commission Rate = Target Variable Comp ÷ Annual Quota
Accelerator Threshold Sales = Annual Quota × Accelerator Threshold %
Commission Earned = min(Actual Sales, Threshold Sales) × Base Rate + max(0, Actual Sales − Threshold Sales) × Base Rate × Accelerator Multiplier
Total Compensation = Base Salary + Commission Earned
OTE Attainment % = (Total Compensation ÷ (Base Salary + Target Variable Comp)) × 100

On-Target Earnings (OTE) is defined as base salary plus commission earned at exactly 100% quota attainment. Most companies target a 50/50 to 60/40 base-to-variable split for account executives, and accelerators typically multiply the commission rate by 1.5x-2x on sales above 100% of quota.
