The true cost per mile is calculated by summing all annual vehicle expenses and dividing by the annual miles driven.

Annual Fuel Cost = (Annual Miles ÷ MPG) × Gas Price per Gallon
Annual Depreciation Cost = Current Vehicle Value × Annual Depreciation Rate
Annual Financing Cost = Monthly Loan/Lease Payment × 12
Total Annual Cost = Fuel + Depreciation + Insurance + Maintenance + Registration + Financing
Cost Per Mile = Total Annual Cost ÷ Annual Miles Driven

The IRS standard mileage rate (67 cents/mile in 2024) is a commonly used benchmark. Actual cost varies significantly by vehicle type, age, and driving habits. Depreciation is the largest cost for most vehicles.
