MPG Savings Formula

Compares the annual and lifetime fuel cost at two different MPG ratings given annual mileage and current gas prices.

Annual Fuel Cost = (Annual Miles ÷ MPG) × Gas Price per Gallon
Annual Savings = Annual Fuel Cost (Current MPG) − Annual Fuel Cost (New MPG)
5-Year Savings = Annual Savings × 5
10-Year Savings = Annual Savings × 10
Payback Period (months) = Upgrade Cost ÷ (Annual Savings ÷ 12)

Fuel savings assume consistent annual mileage and constant gas prices. In practice, gas prices fluctuate. The U.S. average gas price has ranged from $2.20 to $5.00 per gallon over the past decade. Higher gas prices amplify MPG savings significantly.

Operational Guide

How to Use the Gas Mileage Savings Calculator

1

Enter your current MPG

Input your vehicle's current combined MPG. You can find this on the window sticker, fueleconomy.gov, or by tracking your fill-ups.

2

Enter your new/target MPG

Enter the MPG of the vehicle or fuel improvement you're considering. Even 5 extra MPG can produce significant savings.

3

Enter annual miles and gas price

Enter how many miles you drive per year and your local gas price per gallon.

4

Optional: Enter an upgrade cost

If you're paying for a fuel efficiency upgrade (e.g., new tires, tune-up, or a new vehicle), enter the cost to see your payback period.

5

Click Calculate

See annual savings, 5-year savings, 10-year savings, and break-even period if an upgrade cost was entered.

Real-World Scenario Example
