Road Trip Gas Cost Calculator

Calculate total gas cost for any road trip based on distance, MPG, and gas price. Split cost between passengers and see estimated driving time.

Mathematical Audit

Road Trip Gas Cost Formula

Calculates fuel cost based on total trip distance divided by fuel efficiency, multiplied by the price per gallon.

Total Distance = One-Way Distance × (2 if Round Trip)
Gallons Needed = Total Distance ÷ MPG
Total Fuel Cost = Gallons Needed × Gas Price per Gallon
Cost Per Person = Total Fuel Cost ÷ Number of Passengers
Estimated Drive Time (hours) = Total Distance ÷ Average Speed

This calculator estimates fuel cost only. Budget additional amounts for food, lodging, tolls, and activities. The average U.S. highway speed is approximately 65 mph; actual drive time depends on traffic and stops.

Operational Guide

How to Use the Road Trip Gas Cost Calculator

1

Enter the trip distance

Input the one-way distance in miles. Toggle the round-trip option if you are returning by the same route.

2

Enter your vehicle's MPG

Use your EPA highway MPG rating or your real-world average. Highway driving is more efficient than city driving.

3

Enter the gas price per gallon

Use the current local gas price. You can check GasBuddy.com or the AAA Fuel Gauge Report for today's average.

4

Enter the number of passengers

Adding passengers splits the fuel cost. Enter at least 1.

5

Click Calculate

See total gallons, total fuel cost, cost per person, and estimated drive time.

Real-World Scenario Example

"A family of 4 drives 600 miles round-trip in a 32-MPG SUV with gas at $3.50/gallon."

Inputs

oneWayDistance:300
roundTrip:true
mpg:32
gasPricePerGallon:3.5
passengers:4
averageSpeedMph:65

Result

Total: 18.75 gallons needed, $65.63 in fuel. Cost per person: $16.41. Estimated driving time: ~9.2 hours (round trip).

Important Disclaimer

Gas cost estimates are based on entered distance and MPG. Actual costs depend on real-world fuel efficiency, driving conditions, and current local gas prices. This calculator estimates fuel only and does not include tolls, lodging, food, or other travel expenses.
