How Mystery Shopper Earnings Are Calculated

Cash earnings come from the paid fee portion of each shop, not the reimbursement value, since reimbursements only cover the cost of the required purchase. Mileage costs between shop locations are subtracted from cash earnings to find true net income, and time spent per shop is used to find your effective hourly rate.

Weekly Cash Earnings = Avg Fee per Shop × Shops per Week
Weekly Reimbursement Value = Avg Reimbursement per Shop × Shops per Week
Weekly Mileage Cost = Avg Miles per Shop × Shops per Week × Mileage Rate
Weekly Net Cash Earnings = Weekly Cash Earnings − Weekly Mileage Cost
Monthly / Annual = Weekly × 4.345 / 52
Effective Hourly Rate = Weekly Net Cash Earnings ÷ (Shops per Week × Time per Shop in Hours)

Reimbursement value (free meals, products, or services) is tracked separately from cash earnings since it isn't spendable income — it offsets a purchase you'd otherwise pay for yourself. Mileage is deducted at the IRS standard business rate to reflect the real cost of driving between shop locations, which most mystery shopping companies do not reimburse separately from the shop fee.
