Instacart & Shipt Shopper Earnings Formula
Instacart and Shipt pay shoppers differently. Instacart full-service shoppers earn a 'batch pay' amount set by the app for each order (based on item count, distance, and effort), plus 100% of customer tips. Shipt shoppers earn a base pay of $5 plus 7.5% of the order subtotal, plus 100% of tips. This calculator also subtracts an estimated vehicle mileage expense (using the IRS standard mileage rate) to estimate your true net earnings.
Both Instacart and Shipt let shoppers keep 100% of customer tips, which typically make up 33-42% of total earnings. Instacart batch pay typically ranges from $4-$12 per order before tips. Median total trip pay is around $12.21/hour for Instacart and $17.44/hour for Shipt (Shipt guarantees a $16/hour earnings standard before tips in many markets). The default mileage rate of $0.725/mile reflects the 2026 IRS standard business mileage rate, useful for estimating vehicle wear-and-tear and fuel costs or for tax deduction purposes — adjust it to match your actual vehicle costs.
