Print-on-Demand Profit Formula

Print-on-demand sellers earn the difference between their retail price (plus any shipping charged) and the sum of the base production cost charged by their POD supplier, their actual shipping cost, and the selling platform's fees. Etsy charges a transaction fee plus a payment processing fee on the full sale amount, while Shopify and standalone websites typically only incur payment processing fees.

Revenue = Retail Price + Shipping Charged to Customer
Platform Fee = Revenue × Platform Fee % + Platform Flat Fee
Total Cost = Base Production Cost + Shipping Cost + Platform Fee
Net Profit = Revenue − Total Cost
Profit Margin % = (Net Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
Monthly Net Profit = Net Profit × Monthly Orders

Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee on the total sale (item price + shipping) plus a 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee, for a combined rate modeled here at approximately 9.5% + $0.45. Shopify and own-website estimates use a standard 2.9% + $0.30 card processing rate via Shopify Payments or Stripe. Listing fees (e.g., Etsy's $0.20 per listing) are not included since they're amortized across multiple sales.
